Just thought I'd do a little video of my husband's latest project, incase anyone else might be contemplating the same -- perhaps this will be helpful to them. Tim took pity on me having to literally spend hours hand-watering the garden, so he bought a little gas-powered water pump. BUT -- mechanically-challenged as I am, I wasn't really comfortable with not having the good, old-fashioned hand pump (that I knew I could operate LOL). So, he decided to drive a second point down and outfit that one with the new pump. You can never have too many wells in a crisis you know. Who knows -- I may have the neighborhood coming over at some point and filling water containers. . .

What's irrigation?

Irrigation is the practise of moving water from one area to another to compensate for lack of adequate rainfall. It is used on farms to water crops and maintain pastures for grazing animals, as well as in homes to water gardens and lawns.

When was farm irrigation invented?

There is evidence of farm irrigation practised as far back as the 6th Century BC in the Middle East. These areas would have not had enough rainfall to support the crops they were able to produce without the help of irrigation.

Thousands of years ago, irrigation was engineered with carefully placed canals and relied on gravity to move the water. Many of today's irrigation systems still work off this basic plan and feature canals that rely on gravity for power.

What types of irrigation do modern farms use?

Something farmers need to consider when planning their irrigation is how to use their water as efficiently as possible. Not enough water with result in dry, dead fields, while too much water can lead to pooling and soil erosion.

Farms use all sorts of methods to irrigate their fields. Depending on the size of the field, the climate and the terrain, different methods may be more appropriate than others. Here are a few common ways farms irrigate their land.

Surface Irrigation

Surface irrigation systems rely on gravity to move the water from one place to another. By using furrows and dykes to steer the water, controlled floods are unleashed on the land to water them. In cases in which gravity cannot bring water to every part of the land, pumps may be used or water can be carried by hand.

Seepage Irrigation

This form of irrigation gives water to plants from below. In areas where there is a high water table. Typically, these areas are in lowlands and marshy areas. This method requires raising the water table through a system of pumps and canals.

Sprinkler irrigation

Sprinkler irrigation describes irrigation in which the water is pumped through a series of pipes or hoses, and then sprayed over the land. Sprinklers can be mounted on moving devices or pivots to distribute the water evenly and avoid pooling.

Where does the wastewater come from?

Farm wastewater comes from all sorts of sources. These include natural lakes and rivers as well as man-made reservoirs and pond. Collected floodwater and treated wastewater can also be used to irrigate fields.

Emergency preparedness and self-sufficient living cross paths through hand water pumps. Hand water pumps, such as those by Simple Pump, can bring water up from 350 feet below ground, although most use it for depths of 100 feet. The pump can be operated when sharing the same well with an electric submersible pump, bringing up five gallons of water per minute.

Hand water pumps use a pump rod design. For Simple Pumps, this requires eight pounds of pressure to be applied to a 24-inch handle. Longer handles need less pressure for bringing up water.

Manually pumping water up from an aquifer every day can be exhausting, however. A family, for example, needs at least 250 gallons per day. Some may even use up to 1000 gallons per day. To calculate this, a manual water pump brings up five gallons of water per minute and, if an individual works constantly, 300 per hour. At this rate, a person would need to pump regularly without stopping for nearly three and a half hours to bring up 1000 gallons. Although not a bad workout, it becomes tiring and time-consuming when done daily.

As a solution, a hand water pump can be motorized. A 105ME/GM 12 volt DC 60 rpm 1/5 hp bolt-on motor extension can be added to a manual well pump from Simple Pump. This particular motor can use two forms of power: a battery with 200 amp-hours and a 130-watt solar panel.
